Couples Treatment – Partners and Marriage

imageLove is grand, but most people’s conception of romantic love has more to do with infatuation and sexual attraction than real commitment. When two people decide to become a couple, they’re committing to work together to create a unique partnership designed to support each party. These wonderful commitments give the participants a net of safety and security. The benefits are rewarding, lasting, and life-changing.

Unavoidably, when two unique individuals come together differences manifest themselves and problems arise. Conflicts can fester and grow in a relationship and reach a boiling point. Emotions can run extremely hot and intense, and the volume in conversations tends to rise. This is no condition for anyone to make an important life choice, or rationally work through a problem.

Professional psychotherapy can offer an environment that’s both emotionally safe and highly productive in meeting the needs of a struggling couple. The therapist can act as a cool, impartial third party who can help both sides see the other’s point of view. There’s no wound so deep, no conflict so old, and no relationship beyond saving if both parties are willing to put the other person first and make an effort in good faith. Professional psychotherapy can be the ideal workshop to begin and continue the healing process under experienced professional guidance.

Depression and Anxiety: Common Warning Signs

Nobody feels wonderful all the time, and that is as it should be. After all, how can we experience joy if we never knew sorrow? But chronic anxiety and depression mean more than just bad feelings.

Clinical Depression

It’s one thing to feel blue or out of sorts sometimes. It’s quite another thing when those feelings consume every thought and hold your life hostage. Clinical depression has come to be known as “the common cold” of psychological disorders. It is actually a chemical imbalance in the brain that can affect every aspect of your life. Consider also that depression can be terminal, increasing the risk of and occasionally leading to suicide. Some common warning signs include:

  • Irregular sleeping patterns – either sleeping too much or too little
  • Constant feelings of despair or hopelessness
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in normal activities
  • Irritability and difficulty concentrating

If one or more of these warning signs has manifested itself in your life, or in the life of someone you know, there is hope. Treatment usually consists of a combination of prescribed medication and in-office psychotherapy. There is hope and help available to those who are willing to reach out for it. While it is common for those who suffer from depression to instinctively isolate, confronting that instinct and reaching out in spite of it is the best indicator of success in overcoming this common challenge.

Chronic Anxiety

Fear is a perfectly healthy reaction in human beings, providing a crucial tool for basic survival, but like depression, feelings of anxiety can run amok in people’s lives. This also is caused by a chemical imbalance in the body leading to a whole spectrum of panic and anxiety disorders. Some common warning signs of a panic or anxiety disorder are as follows:

  •  Sudden feelings of panic or fear with no apparent cause
  • Frequent nightmares or flashbacks about traumatic events
  • Feelings of panic interfering with daily activities

A history of sexual or physical abuse in the family, substance abuse, and chronic illness can all exacerbate these and other symptoms. Treatment usually involves some combination of prescribed medication and in-office psychotherapy. Every case is different. If you believe you or someone you know suffers from chronic anxiety or a panic disorder, consult with a trained professional to customize a solution that’s right for you.

Brianne Toole offers professional psychotherapy with a practical, solution-focused approach.
